Edmund is a relief baker for a bakery chain. His employer sends him to help out for a week at a site 200 miles from where he usually works. His employer books bed and breakfast accommodation for him but he will need to settle the bill at the end of the week and arrange his own travel and meals. He sets out early in the morning on Day 1 and gets home at 9 p.m. on Day 8. He is given an advance of £700.

If he spends the following, how much more could he claim from his employer and for which expenses will he need to have kept receipts? You should assume that his employer’s expenses policy allows for the maximum tax and NICs-free amounts.
