The applicants were unmarried sisters, aged 88 and 81, who have co-habited all their lives. For the last 30 years they had lived together in a house built on inherited land from their parents. The sisters owned the house in their joint names. The property was valued at approximately £875,000. In addition to her joint share in the house, each sister owned investments worth over £150,000. Each sister made a will leaving all her property to the other.
