26.6.1 Introduction

In the past, it has been common for the rules of a registered pension scheme to provide for the payment of death benefits as a lump sum or as a pension to a dependant. Since 6 April 2012, the last restrictions that applied to protected rights benefits that arise as a result of somebody contracting out of the state scheme fell away, meaning that all DC benefits can now be paid in the same way.
