The modern breed of life assurance protection plans includes a much wider range of benefits than just a death benefit. For example, many plans now include benefits such as:

critical/serious illness benefit – the payment of all or part of the sum assured on diagnosis of critical/serious illness;

terminal illness benefit – the payment of all or part of the sum assured on diagnosis of terminal illness;

income protection benefits – the payment of a regular income to somebody who can no longer continue to follow their occupation.
