There are two forms which this might take – anatomical examination and research, on the one hand, and therapeutic use, on the other.

The therapeutic use of body parts may be authorised by the person lawfully in possession of the body when authorised by the deceased either:

(a)in writing at any time, such as by the carrying of a donor card; or

(b)orally during his or her last illness in the presence of two witnesses, when there is no reason to believe that the request was subsequently withdrawn.19
