The legal nature of a partnership is largely governed by the statutory instrument under which the partnership is formed. On the level of whether the firm is a body corporate, a distinction is to be observed between:

a general partnership under the Partnership Act 1890 and a limited partnership under the Limited Partnerships Act 1907 on the one hand; and

a limited-liability partnership (LLP) under the Limited Liability Partnerships Act 2000 on the other.
