2.8.1 Overview

Self-assessment has been in existence since 1996–97, so for over 20 years. It is the system whereby individuals (and also trustees and partnerships) file tax returns every year which include a self-assessment of how much tax is owed. As this self-assessment is the amount of tax paid, it eliminates the need for HMRC to raise tax assessments.
