Research and development allowances (RDAs) are available for certain capital expenditure on research and development. A separate relief is available for qualifying revenue expenditure on research and development by companies (see ¶29000ff.).

Research and development is defined in the legislation as meaning activities that fall to be treated as research and development in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice and includes oil and gas exploration and appraisal (CAA 2001, s. 437).
