An ‘earnings period’ is a period to which earnings paid to or for the benefit of an employed earner are deemed to relate, irrespective of the period over which they were earned. Class 1 liability is calculated on the basis of the earnings paid in the earnings period and the limits applicable to that earnings period. No person may have more than one earnings period in respect of a single employment (Contributions Regulations, reg. 2).
