(1)reading the official guidance and printing a copy because the guidance can help the taxpayer curb an over-zealous officer who, for example, asserts that all his questions must be fully answered before he leaves at 5 p.m. (HMRC Compliance Handbook Manual at CH 25000 on information and inspection powers; ‘VAT visits and inspections’ (www.gov.uk/vat-visits-inspections) and Compliance Check Factsheet CC/FS3 Compliance checks: visits by agreement or advance notice (www.gov.uk/government/publications/compliance-checks-visits-by-agreement-or-advance-notice-ccfs3) which indicates some checks done by HMRC);
