Where a monetary consideration is expressed in a currency other than sterling, it must be converted into sterling in accordance with European law applicable to valuation for customs purposes. The material time for valuation, by reference to which the appropriate exchange rate is determined under the rules, is the time of supply, i.e. the tax point (VATA 1994, Sch. 6, para. 11).
