The self-supply rules do not apply to motor cars if HMRC are satisfied that the cars are used solely for the purpose of research or development.

On 14 August 1972 HMRC wrote to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders specifying the conditions which they would require in order to be satisfied that a motor car had been used solely for research and development.
