Until 1983, the receipt by a company of consideration from the disposal of assets could only be treated as a deduction in arriving at allowable expenditure up to the original cost of the asset; there was no provision for taxing any surplus on disposal. As part of the revisions in the Oil Taxation Act 1983 of the expenditure to be allowed in respect of long-term assets, a charge on the receipts from disposals was introduced.
