The valuable material extracted from an oil or gas field, often called petroleum, is a mixture of chemical compounds called hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbon molecules contain only carbon and hydrogen atoms but in widely varying numbers and proportions. The simplest hydrocarbon is methane whose molecules contain only one carbon atom per molecule. It is a gas at normal temperature and pressure and the product of a typical Southern Basin gas field is methane.
