The charge of death under IHTA 1984, s. 4(1), does not apply in relation to the death of a person as a result of a wound inflicted or disease contracted at a time when that person was on active service (s. 154). The legislation defines more precisely:

(1)the causes of death, and

(2)the service or employment,

which qualify a person's estate for exemption from inheritance tax.
