A transfer of value is exempt to the extent that the value transferred is attributable to property which becomes comprised in the estate of the transferor's spouse or civil partner. In so far as the value transferred is not so attributable, it is exempt to the extent that the spouse's or civil partner's estate is increased (IHTA 1984, s. 18).
