‘Goodwill’ is not specifically defined in the Taxes Acts but is generally associated with a trade, business or profession. It is often manifest on the sale of a trade or business where there is an excess of the purchase price over the value of tangible assets. It is the benefit and advantage of the good name, reputation and connections of a business. It is generally inseparable from the endeavour with which it is associated.
