In establishing a figure for maintainable earnings, it has to be remembered that it is future earnings which are of interest, not the past. The standard formula is that ‘maintainable earnings’ will be quantified as the level below which profits would not normally be expected to fall in the future in the normal course of business and measured according to forecasts and historical results.
