The phrase ‘maintainable’ dividend suggests that it will be possible to predict dividends of a constant (or at least a minimum) amount, which are going to be paid on a regular basis. However, dividends can vary both in amount and frequency, companies which have previously paid dividends may stop doing so and others which have never paid a dividend may decide to start. The calculation needs to reflect not only the amounts expected to be paid but also when payments might be made.
