Subject to some important exemptions below, a deduction from earnings may be claimed for travel expenses if: (ITEPA 2003, s. 338):

the employee is obliged to incur and pay them as ‘holder of the employment’ (on which see ¶454-040); and

the expenses are ‘attributable to the employee's necessary attendance at any place in the performance of the duties of the employment’.
