Dependants fall into three categories: spouses/civil partners, children and others.

A person who was the spouse or civil partner of a member at the time of the member’s death is a dependant of that member. However scheme rules may permit a person who was a spouse/civil partner at the time the member first became entitled to a pension under the scheme to be regarded as a dependant (FA 2004, Sch. 28, para. 15(1), (1A)).
