The relief for early trade losses provides one of the rare cases where losses may be carried back and set against earlier income. It will be noted that losses may be set against income other than previous trading profits; indeed they may be set against income of the trader which accrued before the trade was commenced. It is a very useful provision and is, not surprisingly, hedged with a number of conditions.
