Introduction

Historically the inheritance tax (IHT) process has been almost an entirely paper-based process, but HMRC have been working to create a new online process to enable users to submit IHT forms digitally and check progress through an online system. The legal framework for the new IHT online service, including the online delivery of returns, the delivery of other information for IHT purposes to or by HMRC, and for payments and repayments of IHT to be made by electronic means, has been provided by the Inheritance Tax (Electronic Communications) Regulations 2015 (SI 2015/1378) , which came into force on 6 July 2015.
