Married couples

A system of independent taxation of spouses’ incomes and chargeable gains applies. The husband and wife are separately taxed on their respective incomes and neither spouse is responsible for the other spouse's tax affairs. Each is entitled to reliefs from income tax (e.g. for tax losses or interest paid) in their own right and are entitled to a ‘personal allowance’.
