The areas of the UK continental shelf designated under Continental Shelf Act 1964, often referred to as ‘the UK sector’, are treated as within the UK in respect of work in the oil and gas industry. This means that rig workers are not treated as outside the definition of ‘employed earner’ even though they work outside the 12-mile limit, so employee Class 1 liability arises in the same way as on the mainland.
